BFH started as one of numerous activities, such as Mexican Folkloric dance and music, in which the youth group participated to stay active. As the group learned about folkloric dance, we felt the need to continue to learn more about the arts in general and their positive effect. We also realized the importance of introducing children to the arts early on in their lives. Thus, Ballet Folklórico Huehuecoyotl was established in 1996 in Elgin, Illinois as a non-profit organization under the direction of co-founder Julian Hernandez. In 2000, the children’s group was created so that the knowledge the adults gained could be shared and passed on to the younger generations who would then learn about dance, history, music, and the arts while engaging in a healthy activity.
"To engage and inspire future leaders to realize their potential through artistic expression
and community engagement."
Since then, the BFH.org has constantly moved forward reaching new levels of excellence. They’ve won several awards in various folkloric competitions in Texas, New York & Georgia.
In June of 2003, BFH was approved to become an In-Residence Ensemble of the Elgin Community College Institute for the Performing Arts; a great benefit is that students earn can college credits for their hard work. 16 years and up.
In 2014, focusing on continuing to grow and to ensure the founder’s vision and group’s legacy was passed on; a total group restructuring took place. The group’s name, mission statement and tagline were revised to better reflect our future path. “Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl – Many Steps One Dance” became “BFH.org ‐ Dance…Express…Inspire!”
BFH is open to all interested in learning the beauty of the arts through Mexican folk dance. For more information, email us at:info@bfh.or
