The Ballet started as one of numerous activities the youth group did to keep active. As the group learned about Mexican folkloric dance, they felt the need to continue learning of Mexico’s rich heritage and share their knowledge and experience year round to a broader audience. With this, the Ballet Folklórico Huehuecoyotl was established in 1996 as a non-profit organization under the direction of founder, Julian Hernandez. In 2000, the children’s group was created so that the knowledge gained could be shared and passed onto the younger generations giving them the opportunity to learn about their heritage while engaging in a healthy activity.

Since then the Ballet has constantly moved forward reaching new levels of excellence. yThe Ballet was chosen for the 2002 Elgin Latino Arts Award and selected for the Illinois Arts.

Council Artstour Roster for 2003-2005 and 2005-2007. The Adult Group has competed in folkloric dance competitionsin both Dallas and Corpus Christi, Texas, winning 3 awards in 2003, 7 awards in 2004 and 4 awards in 2005. They placed third at both the 2004 and 2005 International Folkloric Dance Competition in New York.

In June of 2003, the Ballet was approved to become an In-Residence Ensemble of the Elgin Community College Institute for the Performing Arts; one of the great benefits of having the students earn college credit for their hard work.

El Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl, since July 2002 it’s main objective of dance and choreographic shall be:

Conservative; They are those choreographic assemblies that are made after having an exhausted investigation, their bringing to the stage is derived from the most representative forms in the aspect musical choreographic in their customs and surroundings, only that in this case, the choreograph could the have the freedom to reduce choreographic and musical phrases, also could unify style as far as the dancers and the customs,

WITHOUT LOSING the AUTHENTICITY of its essence.
